Alex stood on the grassy field, his calm eyes fixed on the dissipating distortion of hazy space in the distance that returned to normal moments later, leaving behind ten individuals who appeared bewildered and confused as they examined their surroundings.

The ten individuals belonged to various races, with the most noticeable individual among them being a golden panther beastman and a dragonkin lady of the green venomous serpentine dragon clan.

They were all in tattered, dirty cloths that barely covered their bodies, their lips dry, their skin turned pale and looked malnourished, but that was to be expected as they were all criminals on death row, either to be executed or to rot in small uncleaned dungeon cells for life.

“You are all criminals fated to rot till death in a small dungeon cell where even the sun’s ray doesn’t reach, but guess what? Today is your lucky or unlucky day,” Alex said, with a tone devoid of emotion,

“I say lucky because if you successfully kill me, then your death penalty would be removed, and you would be moved to a decently nicer cell, but unlucky because if you fail to kill me, then you will have close experience of death before returning to your cells,” Alex said, his emotionless words hung in the air, capturing the attention of each individual.

“I don’t know what trickery this is, but I am not complaining about leaving my small gutter of a dungeon cell just by killing a weakling like you,” A human said as he licked his dry lips with a wide smile on his face as he lowered his posture.

“You should pick a weapon before we start our battle,” Alex said, his chaos wings materializing in an instant to defend against the cloaked in gravity aimed to take his head off.

“Looks like you all understand the deal, so let’s begin,” Alex said while all ten individuals were cloaked in a shroud of misty energy that, in an instant, gave their pale bodies a lively glow.

While racks lined with weapons got teleported near the gathered group with a large variety of weapons on them, making them stare at each other in surprise and confusion before shiting their gazes toward Alex.

Alex didn’t want to just pick a few criminal individuals, execute his skills on them to end their lives, and be done with it as Erebus did, but instead, he wanted to know how he squares up against real individuals who fouth to save their lives and do so on almost equal terms.

Alex knew that two months ago, he would struggle against a single good peak Fifth Rank individual, but after weeks of grueling improvements, he knew that he could crush one easily by just using his elemental, but he didn’t know what would the result be against multiple opponents.

Alex believed he would fare well and win with his improved elemental manipulations, but without putting this belief to the test, it was just baseless pride.

So Alex was putting his skills to the test in a situation where he either survived and enjoyed victory and the thrill of advancing to the fourth Rank.

Or get killed and spent the next twelve hours at home reminiscing over his firth death and hours of wait before he could advance to the fourth Rank.

The ten individuals didn’t ask any questions as they moved to pick their weapons, their eyes scanning the surroundings, with a few among them engaging in hushed conversations as they moved.

‘Let’s not make any mistakes and add more hours to the years of waiting time before I could advance to the Fourth Rank.’ Alex thought as he strengthened his grip on the sword, his eyes not leaving any of the ten individuals.

‘Darkness Field’ ‘Chaos Wave’

Alex Winges got shrouded in a dense canopy of chaotic energy that swiftly concentrated on the serrated edges, and he slashed them to the side, sending multiple towering slashes of concentrated chaotic energy that ripped through the ground and met with the weapon of three individuals approaching him.

Alex moved his shoulder to the side to avoid a spear while he moved his right-wing forward in a piercing motion and simultaneously created a shield of darkness to defend against the incoming barrage of wind arrows from his back.

The member of the merfolk clan, seeing the wing coming from the side aimed at his head, stepped back as he swung his arm with a spear to the side, aiming to smash with the side blunt attack to throw him off balance.

Alex, having predicted such an attack, slashed his sword to meet the spear, stopping in its track while his wing, inches away from the merfolk’s face, turned into intangible chaotic energy that swelled in size.

As the sleek blade-like wing melted into a cloud of chaotic energy and swelled in size, the merfolk opened his jaw wide, sending forth a jet of highly pressurized water that tore through the chaotic cloud of energy before coming to a halt.

The chaos wings were not just a simple trick that gave Alex some defense and ability to fly, but it was a masterpiece far better than anything he had created in his past life.

The chaos wings represented Alex’s control over his chaos manipulation as he could turn them as hard as steel or into intangible winges of pure, chaotic energy.

The chaos wings not only gave Alex the ability to fly and increased agility in the air, but they also served as offensive weapons in both their hardened and intangible state.

In the hardened state, the chaos wings were capable of being used as weapons and causing great damage by just touching an individual because of the chaotic energy cloaking them.

While in an intangible state, the chaotic energy could face through any crack in his opponent’s defense and rip through their bodies with its destructive might.

The true value of the Chaos wings lay in their exceptional defensive capabilities, as they could be adjusted against physical or magical attacks at will.

They were highly maneuverable, fast, destructive, and capable of endless regeneration as long as Alex had the mental energy and mana to sustain them, making them a perfect package.

All these benefits came with a major drawback, and that was the rapid consumption of his mental energy.

In a high-stakes battle, he could sustain them for a maximum of seventy to a hundred and ten seconds, with the duration decreasing based on the intensity of his focus on using darkness manipulation in combat.

‘I need to take out the archer, the human gravity mage, and either the panther or the dragonkin before I can use the second skill and move to end this battle,’ Alex thought as he funneled more chaotic energy into his wing to defend against the jet of water.

‘Fantom Walk,’ Alex moved toward the archer the moment the water jet pressure slowed.

Alex was blurred as he moved with his sword pulsing in energy, and he appeared before the archer who stood suspended in the sky with his bow stretched, preparing a big attack.

Alex slashed his sword, aimed at the neck of the human archer, who looked a bit surprised, but he kept calm as he released his prepared arrow.

Alex smiled, seeing the archer’s reaction, knowing he had a barrier of dense air protecting him, and he expected it to delay the sword enough for his arrow to hit its mark.

‘Darkness Veil Reaper Slash’

Alex swung his sword, its edge resonating with pitch darkness, unleashing an incredibly thin slash that cut through the arrow, the air barrier, and the archer’s shocked expression, cleaving him in two.
